Portugese westkust

Waar de Spaanse kust nog om de paar uur varen een haven heeft, verandert dat aan de Portugese kust. De Portugese westkust is feitelijk een verticale streep met af en toe een haven. Afstanden tussen de havens zijn al gauw 60 mijl of meer. Bij de planning van een trip ga je altijd uit van 5 mijl per uur. Als het sneller gaat, is het een meevaller. Gaat het langzamer moet de motor aan of een alternatief plan komen. Dat betekent bij 60 mijl, 12 uur vaartijd. Vroeg opstaan en doorvaren dus! De Portugese havens zijn ook wat minder goed beschut tegen de oceaan deining dan ik tot nu toe gewend was. Ik had er wel iets over gelezen maar me niet gerealiseerd hoe vervelend dit kan zijn. Op de westkust staat 5.000 km oceaan te beuken bij slecht weer, maar ook bij goed weer gaan de golven gewoon door de havens te teisteren. Hierdoor ontstaat een deining van vaak minder dan 50 cm, maar hier zit zo’n een massa achter. De deining duwt de steigers en alle boten die daaraan vast zitten omhoog. Omdat iedere steiger en iedere boot een ander gewicht hebben en dus anders op de deining reageren, krijg je een polonaise van onregelmatig op- en neergaande boten en steigers. Als dan mijn boot net naar boven gaat, terwijl de steiger net daalt, komt er een ongelofelijke kracht op de landvasten te staan. Dit gaat gepaard met een knal waardoor het klinkt alsof mijn kikkers uit het dek worden getrokken. Het is voorgekomen dat ik ’s nachts om drie uur in mijn boxershort op de steiger stond, hopeloos tegen mijn boot aan het mompelen was wat ik in hemelsnaam moet doen om haar rustig te krijgen, terwijl ze tekeerging als een dolle stier in de box. Na alle landvasten gecheckt te hebben en evt voorzien van een tweede reserve landvast, rechtte ik moedeloos mijn rug om vervolgens te zien dat ik niet de enige booteigenaar ben, die moedeloos op de steiger staat te klagen. Snel door naar rustiger vaarwater!
