Halfway party

Vandaag bereiken we het halfway point!
Ter vergelijking: als wij vanuit Amsterdam waren vertrokken is de afstand die wij afleggen gelijk aan een rechte lijn naar New Delhi. Die in India ja, niet dat restaurant op de Zeedijk. We zijn nu ongeveer bij de grens tussen Turkije en Syrië. Voor en achter ons is alleen maar water, maar ook naast ons tot aan Moskou en tot en met de Sahara bestaat louter en alleen uit 4000m diep oceaan water. Dat is ongeveer het speelveld waar we ons in bevinden.
De psychologie boekjes aan boord adviseren om een halfway party te organiseren om de sfeer er in te houden. D en ik hebben even kort geëvalueerd en geconcludeerd dat de stemming er prima in zit, dus of daar een feestje voor nodig is betwijfelen we. Daarnaast nodigt de metaforische vergelijking van de grens tussen Turkije en Syrië ook niet uit tot een feestje. Inmiddels zijn we ook redelijk op de hoogte van de gevolgen voor jullie van de Corona crises, ook niet direct een aanleiding om de polonaise in te zetten.
Ik wilde hier een zielig verhaal op gaan hangen over onze ontberingen op zee. Dat het verse fruit en groenten die we nog hadden de Patricia Paay hebben overgeslagen en meteen door zijn gegaan voor de Patty Brard-status: oud en niet lekker meer. Dat we zijn aangewezen op knakworsten uit blik en havermout van houdbare melk. Dat we iedere dag schaduw moeten creëren in de kuip, omdat we anders wegfikken onder de zon die loodrecht boven ons een aanval doet op het warmte record van de dag er voor, dat de afgelopen nachten de zwartste waren die ik in mijn leven heb gezien door het ontbreken van een maan of dat we al dagen niets gevangen hebben behalve een monster dat de vislijn in tweeën rukte waardoor de vislijn door een katapult verstrikt raakte in de vlaggenstok en zwemtrap.
Maar wat we vooraf niet durfde te vermoeden is waarheid geworden: misschien zijn wij hier wel beter af dan elders in de wereld.
De afgelopen 6 etmalen hebben elke keer ruim 170 mijl afgelegd. Aangezien we de eerste dagen op zoek moesten naar wind en daardoor niet in een rechte lijn naar de bestemming voeren, hebben we veel tijd verloren. Ik verwacht daarom dat de tweede helft sneller zal verlopen in tijd dan de eerste. Langzaam maar zeker komt het einde in zicht. We hebben afgesproken tijdens de reis geen alcohol te drinken, tenzij een speciale gelegenheid zich daarvoor leent. Na het oversteken van de evenaar, grijpen we het ‘halfway point’ ook maar aan voor een G&T. Proost op het leven!
