’s Ochtend vroeg op zodat we met afgaand tij voor de haven van Rotterdam langs kunnen varen. Bestemming zou Marina Roompot worden. Op basis van de weersvoorspelling twijfelde ik of we de genua er nog op moesten zetten. Dat gaat in de haven makkelijker dan op open water. Toch besloten het bij de fok te houden. Eenmaal buiten trok de wind aan tot ruim 20 knopen uit ZW. Ik was blij met mijn keuze.

Aangekomen bij de haveningang van Rotterdam netjes het Traffic Center aangeroepen via de Marifoon met het verzoek om de haveningang te mogen passeren in de daarvoor aangegeven ‘Traffic lane’. Volgens de havenmeester deden we er goed aan overstag te gaan om zou het aankomend verkeer voor te blijven. Aankomend verkeer? Waar dan? Ik zag niets. Aangezien ik voor het eerst voor de haven van Rotterdam zeilde en de havenmeester vast meer ervaring heeft dan ik, heb ik zijn advies maar opgevolgd. Eenmaal voorbij de haven, was de wind verder aangetrokken. De LEF was al een paar keer uit zijn roer gelopen. Tijd voor een eerste rif. Gijs en ik hadden de procedure nogmaals doorgelopen. Gijs zou het grootzeil een meter laten zakken terwijl ik de LEF op haar scherpst aan de wind zou houden zodat de druk van het voorlijk van het grootzeil zou zijn. Gijs zou het eerste rif-oog aanhaken waarop ik het onderlijk zou straktrekken. Vervolgens het grootval straktrekken en we konden weer door. Alles ging volgens plan totdat ik bij het hijsen van het grootzeil een scheur zag ontstaan bij de onderste zeillat. Direct de boot met de kop in de wind gestuurd, maar bij de inmiddels 2,5 meter hoge golven kon ik niet direct zien wat het probleem was. Na en tijdje zag ik dat de reefhaak aan het verkeerde oog bevestigd was, waardoor er te veel spanning op het zeil kwam te staan. Stom en mijn fout, ik had het beter en duidelijker moeten uitleggen. Dit is een manke van mij waar ik beter op zal moeten letten in de toekomst. Wat voor mij klaar als een klontje is, is voor iemand die pas net is aangemonsterd niet altijd ook vanzelfsprekend. Er zit niets anders op dan het grootzeil te laten zakken. Dichtstbijzijnde haven is Stellendam. Op de motor varen we richting het Haringvliet.
