We zitten vroeg in het seizoen en de passaatwinden zijn nog aan het opbouwen. Maar gisteren hadden we een goede dag met dik 175 mijl op de teller. D ontpopt zich inmiddels tot een ware groenteboer. Iedere dag inspecteert hij minutieus alle groenten en fruit. Zeeziek fruit wordt geïsoleerd, rotte plekken geamputeerd en overrijp wordt geëlimineerd. De uitkomst van dit onderzoek bepaalt de menukaart van de dag. We hebben op de groenten en fruit een gedifferentieerd bewaringssysteem toegepast. Een deel van de avocado’s wordt bijvoorbeeld bewaard in de koelkast, een ander deel in een donkere kast gewikkeld in keukenpapier en het laatste deel geventileerd in een net opgehangen. Hetzelfde lot ondergaan de wortels, bananen, aardappels, etc. Zo hopen we het verouderingsproces af te remmen en het fruit de Patricia Paay status te laten bereiken: het is oud, maar nog best lekker. Het klimaat is hier echter onverbiddelijk en de meloenen, ananassen en avocado’s hebben hun beste tijd gehad.
Het tweede deel van de reis zullen we het dus moeten doen met de geconserveerde broertjes en zusjes van eerder genoemde groenten en fruit. We hopen het versgehalte wat op te krikken met zelfgevangen vis. De opbrengst van onze inspanningen is echter omgekeerd evenredig met de diepte van de oceaan. Waar we tussen de eilanden nog wel wat vingen, is de opbrengst op de bijna 5000 meter diepe oceaan nihil. Ons gevangen-vis-verklikker-systeem heeft wel een upgrade gehad. De visdraad loopt via een wasknijper op ooghoogte waaraan een colablikje hangt. Komt er spanning op de lijn wordt deze uit de wasknijper getrokken en valt het blikje op het dek wat voldoende geluid produceert om ons te attenderen dat we beet hebben. De theorie klopt, nu maar wachten op een praktijktoets.
